One of the hottest trends in the pool and home fitness industries is the Swim Spa, sometimes called pool spas.  At first glance, one might think it’s a hot tub. In some ways it can be, but a swim spa offers more to those looking to reach fitness and wellness goals. In addition to exercise and fitness opportunities, swim spas offer relaxation, ability to de-stress and ease aching muscles. And while you can also do laps in a traditional swimming pool, swim spas are easily temperature-controlled, offer resistance control and use a lot less water than a swimming pool.

Cardio Workout

Swimming or jogging laps in a swim spa is a great cardio workout due to the multiple pumps sending strong jets of water against the swimmer.  This adjustable resistence builds strength and endurance. There are a host of workouts utilizing resistance which are just as heart-healthy as running but with less impact on the joints and body overall.

More Swim Spa Benefits

Many physical therapists recommend therapy in warm water for those recovering from surgery or injury. Hydrotherapy may help with relaxation, inflammation, joints, flexibility, arthritis, decrease in pain and increase of blood flow, according to the Cleveland Clinic.  Using a swim spa is a great form of exercise for weight-loss or to maintain weight. Need to get some quality sleep? Users also report better sleep after working out or soaking in a swim spa.

Cost of a Swim Spa

Costs are determined by the type of unit, manufacturer, delivery distance and the way in which the spa is added to the home.  Depending on what you choose, however, swim spa units are likely to be a lot less expensive than a full swimming pool.  Units range from $10,000 to more than $30,000 depending on the level of customization and materials.  Taking up at least two-thirds less space than a traditional pool, swim spas are a great option for those with less yard space and tolerance for maintenance.  Unlike most backyard pools, a swim spa may also be used year-round and can often go with you if you move.  When considering costs of a swim spa, it’s important to factor in the expense of water and energy as well as maintenance.

The Project

Taking advantage of this swim spa trend, a client recently used Harmon Builders to build a swim spa addition onto their traditional-style home. From conception to completion, the clients’ priority was to closely match the new addition to the style of their existing home– a nod to Colonial Williamsburg. The results are both functional and beautiful.  Soaring wooden beams, brick-style flooring and a stone archway connecting the main house to the swim spa addition are just a few of the features that combine technology with timeless design details.

More about this project is coming soon on our Portfolio page.  Until then, reach out to Harmon Builders if you have questions about building a custom space for your own swim spa.
